What was the name of the 1868 treaty that created a reservation for the Lakota in present-day South Dakota?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Fort Laramie was the 1868 agreement that established the Great Sioux Reservation for the Lakota.

Negotiated at Fort Laramie in Wyoming Territory, the treaty followed the Red Cloud’s War and required the United States to abandon several military posts along the Bozeman Trail. It recognized Lakota control of a large area centered on the Black Hills and provided hunting rights beyond the reservation boundaries.

The treaty also promised supplies and other provisions. Its terms were later undermined by U.S. pressure, non-Native settlement, and the discovery of gold in the Black Hills during the 1870s.

The agreement is not the same as the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie, which addressed different territories and nations. The 1868 treaty remains central to the modern legal and political history of the Black Hills.
