Answer
Treaty of Fort Laramie
The 1851 agreement between the United States and Plains tribes signed at Fort Laramie was the Treaty of Fort Laramie.
The treaty was concluded on September 17, 1851, at Fort Laramie in present-day Wyoming. Representatives of the United States and several Indigenous nations negotiated boundaries and recognized tribal territories across the Great Plains. In return, the United States promised payments and protection for travelers using emigrant routes.
The agreement sought to reduce conflict as migration increased along the Oregon, California, and other western trails. Its terms were weakened by later migration, military pressure, and disputes over whether all affected peoples had accepted the same obligations.
It is often confused with the separate Treaty of Fort Laramie of 1868. The 1868 treaty followed Red Cloud’s War and created the Great Sioux Reservation, while the 1851 agreement established a different territorial framework for multiple Plains nations.
