Queen Victoria's personal servant and trusted companion was John Brown. A Scottish Highlander, Brown first worked as a gillie and outdoor servant for Prince Albert at Balmoral before becoming closely associated with Victoria.
After Prince Albert died in 1861, Victoria withdrew from public life. Brown became one of the people who could comfort and encourage her, eventually serving as her personal attendant and helping manage her movements and security. His informal manner and unusually close access to the Queen made him influential within the royal household.
Victoria gave Brown personal gifts and commissioned medals recognizing his loyalty and devotion. His importance is reflected in the inscription she approved for a statue: “Friend more than Servant.” Brown died at Windsor Castle in 1883, nearly two decades before Victoria.
A common mix-up is Abdul Karim, another important royal servant who joined Victoria's household in 1887. Karim was her favored Indian attendant later in her reign, while John Brown was the Scottish companion associated especially with her widowhood.
