What was the name of Odin's father?
Answer
Borr
Answer
Borr
Odin's father was Borr, also spelled Bor or Burr in different Old Norse manuscripts and English translations.
Borr was the son of Búri, a primeval being revealed when the cow Auðumbla licked the salty ice. Borr married Bestla, whose father was the giant Bölþorn. Their children were Odin, Vili, and Vé, making Borr the father of three important figures in the Norse creation story.
Borr himself plays only a brief role in the surviving myths. The Poetic Edda mentions him, and Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda identifies him as Odin's father. The texts offer little information about Borr's deeds, origins beyond Búri, or personality.
A common mix-up is confusing Borr with Búri, Odin's grandfather. Búri was the first ancestor exposed by Auðumbla; Borr was Búri's son and the next generation in the divine family line.
