What was the name of Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo’s Johannesburg law firm?
Answer
Mandela and Tambo
Answer
Mandela and Tambo
Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo’s Johannesburg law firm was called Mandela and Tambo.
Established in 1952, the firm became the first Black law partnership in South Africa. It operated from Chancellor House in central Johannesburg, close to the magistrates’ courts, and represented many Black clients facing discriminatory laws and police action.
The practice was especially important because apartheid legislation made legal disputes a routine part of Black South Africans’ lives. Mandela and Tambo handled cases involving pass laws, evictions, forced removals and other abuses.
The firm should not be confused with Mandela’s later political work or with the law office of Witkin, Sidelsky and Eidelman, where Mandela trained earlier. Tambo left South Africa in 1958 and eventually led the ANC in exile.
