MTV’s annual fan-voted awards show honoring films was called the MTV Movie Awards.
The first MTV Movie Awards ceremony was held in 1992. Unlike many traditional film awards, the event emphasized audience participation, popular performances, comedic sketches, and categories built around memorable movie moments.
Its categories included Best Kiss, Best Fight, Best Villain, and Best On-Screen Duo. These awards helped distinguish the ceremony from industry-voted events such as the Academy Awards. The show also became known for playful acceptance speeches and a trophy shaped like a golden container of popcorn.
In 2017, MTV broadened the event to include television and renamed it the MTV Movie & TV Awards. The name change reflected the growing overlap between film, television, streaming, and youth entertainment culture. The original film-focused title remains the answer for the show’s earlier identity.
