The Arch Deluxe was McDonald’s premium burger launched in 1996 as a major branding campaign.
McDonald’s positioned the Arch Deluxe as a more sophisticated menu item aimed at adults. It used a quarter-pound beef patty and distinctive toppings, including a mustard-and-mayonnaise-style sauce, lettuce, tomato, onions, and a potato-flavored bun. The campaign presented the burger as different from McDonald’s traditional family-focused image.
The launch received unusually large advertising support, but sales did not meet the company’s expectations. The product became one of the best-known examples of a fast-food brand attempting to move upscale through a new menu identity and extensive marketing.
The Arch Deluxe is sometimes confused with later premium burgers such as the Big N’ Tasty. Those products belonged to different launches. The Arch Deluxe specifically refers to the 1996 campaign and its adult-oriented positioning.
