McDonald's original speedy-service mascot was Speedee.
Speedee was a chef-like character used by McDonald's before Ronald McDonald became the chain's dominant public mascot. His name referred directly to the fast preparation system developed by Richard and Maurice McDonald in the late 1940s.
The character appeared in early signs and promotional material, often alongside the restaurant's service message. Speedee helped communicate that the business was built around quick, standardized meals rather than the slower drive-in model common when the brothers opened their first restaurant.
Speedee is sometimes confused with the later McDonaldland characters. Grimace, Mayor McCheese, and the Hamburglar were introduced as part of a much larger fictional advertising world. Speedee belongs to the earlier period when the brand focused its identity on speed and operational efficiency.
