What was the name of McDonald’s original service system, promoted by the McDonald brothers before the modern franchise brand expanded?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s original service system was called the Speedee Service System.

Richard and Maurice McDonald developed the system after redesigning their San Bernardino, California, restaurant in 1948. They reduced the menu, organized the kitchen like an assembly line, and concentrated on fast preparation of a small number of popular items.

The name expressed the central promise: customers could receive standardized food quickly. This approach became an important foundation of the fast-food model later expanded through McDonald’s franchising.

The system is also connected to the company’s early branding. Speedee, the original mascot, represented the same idea of speed and efficiency. It is easy to confuse the Speedee Service System with Ray Kroc’s later business expansion, but the system was created by the McDonald brothers before Kroc joined the story.
