Speedee was McDonald's original restaurant mascot, a speeding chef used before the 1960s.
The character represented the McDonald's Speedee Service System, the operating model developed by Richard and Maurice McDonald at their San Bernardino restaurant. That system emphasized a limited menu, assembly-line preparation, and rapid service. Speedee therefore communicated a practical business promise rather than a fantasy story.
Later advertising gave McDonald's a much larger cast of characters, including Ronald McDonald and the McDonaldland figures. Because Speedee appeared before that cast, people sometimes mistake the character for a later mascot or overlook it entirely. The early logo also used Speedee imagery, linking the mascot directly to the chain's first visual identity.
