McDonald’s original mascot was Speedee.
Speedee was a smiling chef character used in McDonald’s early branding. The character represented fast service and appeared on signs and printed material before Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known mascot.
The name Speedee is often confused with Speedy, the name of a different cartoon character associated with Alka-Seltzer advertising. McDonald’s Speedee was connected directly to the restaurant chain’s emphasis on speedy preparation.
The character gradually disappeared as McDonald’s developed the Golden Arches into its dominant visual identity. Ronald McDonald, introduced in the early 1960s, later became the company’s principal character for family-oriented marketing.
