McDonald’s original half-man, half-hamburger mascot was Speedee.
Speedee appeared in McDonald’s early branding as a smiling chef-like character associated with the restaurant’s “Speedee Service System.” The name emphasized fast preparation and efficient service, central ideas in the McDonald brothers’ original restaurant model.
Speedee was eventually replaced by Ronald McDonald as the company’s better-known advertising mascot. Ronald’s introduction in the 1960s shifted McDonald’s children’s marketing toward a broader fantasy world, while Speedee became chiefly a historical symbol of the brand’s early years.
Speedee is sometimes confused with later McDonaldland characters, but he predates the Hamburglar, Grimace, and Mayor McCheese. He also should not be confused with the Golden Arches, which were an architectural and logo element rather than a character.
