What was the name of McDonald's original cooking-service mascot, used before Ronald McDonald?

The story behind the answer

McDonald's original cooking-service mascot was Speedee.

Speedee was introduced in 1948, when Richard and Maurice McDonald reorganized their San Bernardino, California, restaurant around a fast, limited menu. The smiling chef represented the brothers' “Speedee Service System,” which emphasized quick preparation and consistent food.

Speedee appeared in early McDonald's signs and packaging, often alongside the restaurant's original logo. The mascot was eventually replaced by Ronald McDonald as the brand moved toward a more family-focused public image. Speedee is sometimes confused with the later Hamburglar, but the characters served different branding roles.

The Speedee name also reflected the central promise of the early McDonald's concept: customers could receive a small selection of hamburgers, fries, and drinks much faster than at a traditional drive-in restaurant.
