McDonald's original chef mascot was Speedee.
Speedee was a cartoon chef used to represent the McDonald brothers' Speedee Service System, introduced when their San Bernardino restaurant adopted a streamlined self-service format in 1948. The character's name echoed the restaurant's emphasis on speed.
Speedee appeared in early McDonald's signs, packaging, and advertising before Ronald McDonald became the chain's dominant mascot. The character is sometimes confused with later McDonaldland figures, but Speedee belonged to the restaurant's earlier branding era and was not one of the fantasy characters introduced in the 1960s.
The Speedee identity also reflected a major change in fast-food branding: McDonald's was selling consistency and rapid service as much as individual menu items. Its later golden-arches identity replaced the chef-centered look with a more abstract corporate symbol.
