What was the name of McDonald’s original 1948 mascot, shown beside a hamburger-shaped sign?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s original 1948 mascot was Speedee.

Speedee was a small chef character used to represent the McDonald brothers’ fast-service restaurant system. He appeared beside a hamburger-shaped sign and emphasized speed, which was the central selling point of the brothers’ streamlined operation.

The Speedee design predates Ronald McDonald by more than a decade. Ronald became the company’s best-known advertising character after his introduction in 1963, while Speedee gradually disappeared from national branding. The name is sometimes confused with the Speedee Service System, but the mascot and the operating method were closely connected in early McDonald’s identity.

The early logo also differed from the famous golden-arches symbol. McDonald’s branding developed from a speed-focused hamburger image into the architectural arches and the later golden M. Speedee therefore belongs to the company’s earliest visual era, before the modern character-heavy McDonaldland campaigns.
