What was the name of McDonald's original 1948 mascot, shown as a chef-like hamburger character?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s original 1948 mascot was Speedee.

Speedee represented the restaurant’s speedy service system and appeared as a chef-like character with a hamburger-shaped head. His name reflected McDonald’s early emphasis on preparing food quickly, years before Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known character.

Speedee is easy to confuse with later McDonaldland figures. The Hamburglar, Grimace, and other characters were introduced much later, during the early 1970s. Speedee also predates the famous Golden Arches and the modern “M” logo, making him an important part of McDonald’s early visual identity.

The character gradually disappeared from McDonald’s mainstream branding as the company developed a more recognizable restaurant symbol and a broader family-oriented advertising world. The name nevertheless survives in historical accounts of McDonald’s founding-era branding and service model.
