McDonald's original 1948 mascot was Speedee, a chef-shaped character representing fast service.
Speedee appeared after Richard and Maurice McDonald redesigned their San Bernardino restaurant around a simplified, speedy menu. The brothers introduced the Speedee Service System in 1948, and the character helped turn the idea of quick preparation into a visual brand promise.
Speedee was eventually replaced by Ronald McDonald as the company's leading character. The change reflected McDonald's growing emphasis on family restaurants and children's marketing. The name Speedee is sometimes confused with later mascots, but it belonged to the brand's earliest identity, before the Golden Arches became its dominant symbol.
