McDonald's moonwalking character in the 1980s campaign was called Mac Tonight.
Mac Tonight was introduced in 1986 as a sunglass-wearing character with a crescent-moon head. The campaign promoted McDonald's evening business and used a rewritten version of the song “Mack the Knife,” performed in a jazzy advertising style.
The character's visual identity was deliberately different from Ronald McDonald and the earlier McDonaldland cast. His moon-shaped head, dark glasses, and nighttime setting made the campaign easy to distinguish from daytime family advertising.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with the song title because the campaign's music referenced “Mack the Knife.” The character's actual name, however, was Mac Tonight, with “Mac” matching McDonald's branding.
