Mac Tonight was the moon-headed singer in McDonald’s 1980s advertising campaign.
McDonald’s introduced Mac Tonight in 1986 to promote evening dining. The character had a large crescent-moon head, wore sunglasses, and sang a modified version of Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife.” His relaxed nightclub-style presentation was intended to make McDonald’s seem like an appealing destination at night.
The campaign stood apart from McDonaldland’s child-focused fantasy characters. Mac Tonight was aimed more at adults and families looking for dinner, and the advertising used lounge music and late-day imagery. The character became strongly associated with the period’s effort to build McDonald’s dinner and evening business.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with the restaurant’s long-running mascots because of the similar “Mac” name. He was not a McDonaldland mayor or a food character. His defining feature was the crescent moon head, while his advertising role was specifically connected with nighttime visits.
