Speedee was the name of McDonald’s first restaurant mascot, whose logo showed a hamburger-headed chef.
The character appeared when the McDonald brothers were promoting their streamlined restaurant system in the late 1940s. Speedee’s design communicated that customers could receive food quickly, a central distinction of the brothers’ redesigned operation.
McDonald’s early identity emphasized service speed and standardized production rather than the broad fictional cast used in later family advertising. Speedee therefore represented the company’s business method as much as its menu.
The character is sometimes overlooked because Ronald McDonald became far more visible internationally. Ronald’s arrival shifted the brand toward children and family entertainment, while Speedee belonged to the company’s earlier period as a California drive-in and hamburger restaurant.
