Ronald McDonald was McDonald’s first nationally recognizable advertising mascot, introduced in 1963.
The character was created to make the restaurant more memorable to children and families. Early television advertising presented Ronald as a friendly clown associated with McDonald’s food and restaurants. The character’s costume used familiar brand colors and helped turn the company into a recognizable family-oriented experience.
Willard Scott, who later became widely known as a television weather presenter, played the original television version of Ronald McDonald. The character was subsequently redesigned, and later advertising placed him in the expanding McDonaldland setting.
Ronald McDonald is sometimes confused with the Hamburglar because both became major McDonald’s advertising figures. Their roles were different: Ronald was the central friendly mascot, while the Hamburglar was a mischievous character whose stories focused on hamburgers. Ronald remained one of the most internationally recognizable symbols associated with the brand.
