McDonaldland was McDonald’s national advertising world built around its fictional characters.
The campaign was introduced in 1971 and turned McDonald’s branding into a shared fantasy setting. Ronald McDonald served as its central figure, alongside characters such as Mayor McCheese, Grimace, the Hamburglar, and the Fry Kids. The setting allowed television commercials, restaurant displays, toys, and promotions to reinforce the same cast of characters.
McDonaldland was not the name of a menu or a physical theme park. It was an advertising concept, although some restaurants used themed playground equipment and decorations associated with it. The campaign helped McDonald’s establish a distinctive identity for children beyond the food itself.
Several characters changed design over the years. Grimace, for example, began as a character associated with milkshakes before becoming the gentler purple figure widely recognized today. McDonaldland’s character-based branding later declined, but its influence remains visible in the company’s historical advertising and collectible merchandise.
