McDonald’s first mascot, used from 1948, was Speedee.
Speedee was a chef-like character associated with the McDonald brothers’ original Speedee Service System. That system emphasized fast preparation and a limited menu, helping distinguish the restaurant from traditional drive-ins.
The character’s name was a visual shorthand for speed, one of the central ideas in McDonald’s early identity. Speedee appeared in restaurant signs and promotional material before Ronald McDonald became the company’s better-known mascot.
People sometimes confuse Speedee with the later McDonaldland characters. Speedee belonged to the restaurant’s early service branding, while Ronald McDonald and characters such as the Hamburglar were developed for later advertising aimed especially at families and children.
