McDonald’s first mascot, shown as a small chef, was Speedee.
Speedee represented the McDonald brothers’ Speedee Service System, which emphasized a limited menu, assembly-line preparation, and quick customer service. The mascot’s chef appearance connected the promise of speed with the restaurant’s food preparation.
This early branding predates the large cast of McDonaldland characters. Ronald McDonald, Grimace, and other figures were created later as McDonald’s advertising became more focused on children and family entertainment.
Speedee is also sometimes confused with the chef figure used in other early restaurant graphics. In McDonald’s history, however, the small chef mascot is specifically tied to the Speedee name and the company’s original service concept.
