McDonald’s first mascot was Speedee, introduced in the company’s early branding.
Speedee was a chef-like character used in McDonald’s early signs and advertising. The name referred to the restaurant’s emphasis on the “Speedee Service System,” the fast food preparation method developed by Richard and Maurice McDonald.
Speedee appeared before Ronald McDonald and before the McDonaldland characters became central to the brand. The character was eventually replaced as McDonald’s advertising became more focused on family experiences, recognizable food products, and the Golden Arches.
A common mix-up is confusing Speedee with Speedee the mascot of other historical fast-food brands. McDonald’s Speedee belonged specifically to the San Bernardino restaurant founded by the McDonald brothers and later associated with Ray Kroc’s expanding company.
