Speedee was McDonald’s first mascot, created for the restaurant’s original 1948 service concept.
The McDonald brothers introduced a redesigned restaurant in San Bernardino, California, in 1948. Its Speedee Service System emphasized a short menu, assembly-line preparation, and fast customer service. Speedee gave that system a human-like visual identity and helped communicate the restaurant’s promise to customers.
The mascot was drawn as a chef-like hamburger figure, making the connection between speed, food, and the restaurant easy to understand. This early branding came before the Golden Arches became the company’s dominant symbol and before Ronald McDonald became its most famous character.
Later mascots are often mistaken for McDonald’s first because they received more television exposure. Ronald McDonald, Grimace, and the Hamburglar all belong to later advertising eras. Speedee is the historically earlier mascot associated with the 1948 service concept.
