McDonald’s first mascot was Speedee, a winking chef used before Ronald McDonald.
Speedee represented the original Speedee Service System created by Richard and Maurice McDonald. The system emphasized fast, standardized food preparation, so the chef character connected the restaurant’s identity with quick service.
The Speedee image appeared in early McDonald’s signs and promotional material. It is easy to confuse Speedee with the later McDonaldland characters, but Speedee belonged to the restaurant’s earlier branding era.
Ronald McDonald eventually replaced Speedee as the company’s most recognizable mascot. Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Mayor McCheese were introduced later as parts of the McDonaldland advertising world.
