Speedee was McDonald’s first mascot, a chef who appeared on early restaurant signs.
The character represented the Speedee Service System introduced by the McDonald brothers in 1948. Speedee was commonly depicted as a smiling chef with a hamburger-shaped head, visually connecting the mascot with fast hamburger service.
Speedee helped communicate the restaurant’s main selling point before Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known character. Early McDonald’s branding used the character alongside the phrase “Speedee Service System,” making the mascot part of the restaurant’s identity rather than merely a promotional figure.
Speedee is often confused with later McDonaldland characters. Ronald McDonald became the dominant mascot during the 1960s, while the Hamburglar, Mayor McCheese, and others belonged to a later fictional advertising world. Speedee belongs to McDonald’s earlier postwar branding period.
