McDonaldland was McDonald’s fictional advertising world introduced in the late 1960s.
The campaign presented McDonald’s as an imaginative place inhabited by colorful characters, including Ronald McDonald, the Hamburglar, Grimace, Mayor McCheese, and Birdie the Early Bird. These figures appeared in television commercials, restaurant promotions, packaging, and children’s merchandise. The setting helped the company build a recognizable story universe around its food and restaurants.
McDonaldland was especially important to McDonald’s child-oriented branding. Rather than relying only on product demonstrations, the campaign offered recurring characters and a fantasy setting that children could recognize from one advertisement to the next. The characters’ designs and roles changed over time, and not every character appeared in every market.
McDonaldland is sometimes confused with the name of the restaurant chain itself. It was an advertising setting, not a separate restaurant brand. The campaign became less central in later decades as McDonald’s shifted toward other marketing approaches and simplified its public image.
