McDonald’s early hamburger-shaped mascot representing speedy service was Speedee.
Speedee appeared in McDonald’s branding from the late 1940s. The character was a smiling chef-like figure associated with the chain’s “Speedee Service System,” which emphasized quickly prepared food and a limited menu. This system helped distinguish the McDonald brothers’ restaurant from traditional drive-in restaurants.
Speedee is sometimes confused with the later McDonaldland characters. The Hamburglar, Grimace, and Mayor McCheese were introduced much later, after McDonald’s had become a major national brand. Ronald McDonald also belongs to a later advertising era. Speedee’s importance is mainly historical: the character expressed the restaurant’s original promise of fast service before the Golden Arches became its dominant visual symbol.
