McDonald’s early chef mascot was named Speedee.
Speedee appeared in McDonald’s branding during the chain’s early Speedee Service System era. The character was a cartoon chef whose name emphasized the brothers’ promise of fast food service.
The Speedee Service System was developed by Richard and Maurice McDonald at their San Bernardino, California, restaurant after they redesigned their operation in 1948. It focused on a limited menu, assembly-line preparation, and quick customer service.
Speedee is often confused with later McDonald’s characters such as Ronald McDonald, the Hamburglar, and Grimace. Ronald became the chain’s best-known mascot in the 1960s, while Speedee belongs to the earlier branding period before the Golden Arches became dominant.
