McDonaldland was the name of McDonald’s 1970s advertising world populated by Ronald McDonald and other characters.
The fictional setting appeared in commercials beginning in 1971. It included characters and locations built around McDonald’s menu items, giving the brand a consistent fantasy setting rather than relying only on product-focused advertisements.
Ronald McDonald served as the central character, while Mayor McCheese, Grimace, the Hamburglar, and others expanded the cast. The world helped McDonald’s create recurring stories and recognizable visual symbols for children and families.
McDonaldland was an advertising creation, not a real place or a restaurant operating system. It is also different from the Speedee Service System, which was the name of McDonald’s original fast-service method introduced in 1948.
