McDonald’s 1960 hamburger-shaped mascot with legs was named Speedee.
Speedee represented the company’s early promise of fast, organized service. The character’s hamburger form connected him directly to the restaurant’s main product, while his chef styling linked the mascot to the kitchen and food-preparation system.
The mascot appeared during a transitional period in McDonald’s branding. The business was expanding through franchising, and its visual identity was becoming more standardized. Speedee remained associated with the company even as the Golden Arches and later characters became more prominent.
Speedee is often mistaken for Big Mac, but Big Mac is both a hamburger product and a later McDonaldland character called Officer Big Mac. Speedee belongs to McDonald’s earlier mascot history and predates the modern character lineup.
