What was the name of Guru Gobind Singh's horse?

Guru Gobind Singh’s horse was named Neela, also spelled Nila, meaning “blue.”

Neela was traditionally described as a dark or blue-coloured stallion and became closely associated with Guru Gobind Singh in Sikh historical memory and devotional art. The Guru was known by appellations such as Neelay Ghoray Walla, meaning “the rider of the blue horse.” Paintings and oral traditions frequently portray him mounted on this distinctive horse.

Neela appears in several Sikh legends. One story says the horse refused to enter a field planted with tobacco, while another tells how Guru Gobind Singh rode him near a brick kiln at the site now associated with Gurdwara Putthi Sahib. These accounts form part of Sikh lore rather than a fully documented modern biography of the animal.

The name can be confused with Baaj, the hawk associated with Guru Gobind Singh, or with names of other horses in later Sikh traditions. Neela specifically refers to the Guru’s famous blue horse.
