What was the name of Google's first hardware product, a yellow box for enterprise search?

The story behind the answer

Google’s first hardware product was the Google Search Appliance, a yellow box that brought Google-style search to an organization’s internal documents and websites.

Introduced in 2002, the appliance was a rack-mounted server containing Google search technology and indexing software. Businesses, universities, and government agencies could install it behind their own firewalls, allowing employees to search private documents without sending that content to the public Google website.

The device was sold in multiple capacities, including models able to index millions of documents. Its hardware was manufactured by Dell, while Google supplied the software and search technology. The product was later offered under names such as the Google Mini for smaller organizations.

The Search Appliance is often confused with Google’s later consumer hardware, including Google Glass, Google Home, and Chromebox. Google phased out sales in the mid-2010s and discontinued the appliance by 2019, as cloud-based enterprise search became more practical.
