What was the name of Georgia O’Keeffe’s New York gallery owner husband?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O’Keeffe’s New York gallery owner husband was Alfred Stieglitz.

Stieglitz operated several influential galleries, including the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, commonly called 291, and later An American Place. Through these spaces, he exhibited European avant-garde artists as well as leading American modernists. His support helped bring O’Keeffe’s early abstract drawings to public attention.

He and O’Keeffe married in 1924. Stieglitz also made an extensive photographic series of her, documenting her appearance and changing public image over several decades. Their artistic relationship was influential but not simple; O’Keeffe eventually spent much of her time away from New York, especially in New Mexico.

The question can be confused with the names of artists in Stieglitz’s circle, such as Arthur Dove and John Marin. Those artists were associated with American modernism and his exhibitions, but neither was O’Keeffe’s husband. Stieglitz died in 1946.
