The New Mexico ranch Georgia O'Keeffe began visiting in 1934 was Ghost Ranch.
Ghost Ranch is a dramatic area near Abiquiú, known for colorful cliffs, arid terrain, and broad views. O'Keeffe found the landscape artistically compelling and returned repeatedly, making it one of the central settings of her mature work.
Her paintings of the region often isolate cliffs, bones, and distant forms rather than presenting a conventional panoramic view. Cerro Pedernal, a flat-topped mountain visible from parts of the area, also became a recurring subject in her paintings.
Ghost Ranch should not be confused with O'Keeffe's house in the village of Abiquiú. She maintained a home there as well, and the two New Mexico locations are often mentioned together because both were important to her life and work.
