The New Mexico home whose door Georgia O'Keeffe painted repeatedly was her Abiquiu home.
O'Keeffe acquired the abandoned adobe house in Abiquiu in 1945 and had it renovated before moving there permanently in 1949. A courtyard wall and a door seen from inside the house became recurring subjects in her paintings. She described the door as something that fascinated her because it was a real, physical feature she could return to visually.
The door appears in works such as Black Door with Red and Door, and its repeated treatment shows how O'Keeffe could turn an ordinary architectural detail into a central abstract form. The paintings are linked to a specific place while remaining highly simplified.
Her Abiquiu home and studio are now preserved as a National Historic Landmark. It is separate from her Ghost Ranch residence, which was another important New Mexico setting connected with her life and work.
