Georgia O'Keeffe's New Mexico home and studio near Santa Fe was in Abiquiú.
O'Keeffe acquired the Abiquiú property in 1945 and spent years renovating it. The house provided a more private and practical base than Ghost Ranch, where she had also lived and worked. She moved to the Abiquiú house permanently in 1949.
The property contains architectural details that appear repeatedly in her paintings, especially a courtyard door seen through an adobe wall. O'Keeffe treated the doorway as a subject for sustained visual study, varying scale, color, and viewpoint across several works.
The Abiquiú house and studio are now preserved by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Abiquiú is distinct from nearby Ghost Ranch and from Santa Fe, where the museum itself is located. Together, these places form the geographic center of O'Keeffe's later career.
