What was the name of Georgia O'Keeffe's husband, the photographer who founded Gallery 291?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Stieglitz was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and the founder of Gallery 291.

Stieglitz founded the gallery at 291 Fifth Avenue in New York, and its address became its name. Originally called the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession, it opened in 1905 and later became known simply as 291. The gallery exhibited photography alongside European and American modern art.

O'Keeffe's work was first shown there in 1916, after the photographer and gallery director Anita Pollitzer brought Stieglitz a group of her abstract drawings. That exhibition began the professional connection between O'Keeffe and Stieglitz.

The gallery closed in 1917, but Stieglitz continued presenting O'Keeffe’s work at later galleries, including the Intimate Gallery and An American Place. The number 291 therefore refers to a gallery address, not a museum collection or a painting title.
