What was the name of Georgia O’Keeffe’s husband, a pioneering American photographer?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O’Keeffe’s husband was pioneering American photographer Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1864 and became a leading advocate for photography as a fine art. Through his galleries and publications, he promoted both photography and modern European and American artists. His gallery 291 was one of the most influential exhibition spaces in early twentieth-century New York.
He first exhibited O’Keeffe’s work in 1916, before they married in 1924. Stieglitz also made an extensive photographic portrait series of her. Their relationship linked O’Keeffe to a major network of photographers, painters, writers, and collectors, although her career developed on its own terms.
Stieglitz died in 1946. O’Keeffe became the beneficiary of his estate and later moved permanently to New Mexico. Edward Weston, Man Ray, and Paul Strand were important photographers, but none was O’Keeffe’s husband.
