What was the name of George Harrison's first solo album?

The story behind the answer

George Harrison’s first solo album was Wonderwall Music.

Released in 1968, the album was the soundtrack to the film Wonderwall, directed by Joe Massot. It was Harrison’s first solo studio album and the first solo album released by any member of the Beatles while the group still existed.

Harrison recorded the music between November 1967 and February 1968 in London and Bombay. The largely instrumental soundtrack combines Western rock and experimental sounds with Indian classical instruments, including the shehnai, sarod, santoor, tabla, and tanpura. Indian musicians such as Aashish Khan and Shivkumar Sharma participated in the sessions.

The album is sometimes confused with Electronic Sound, Harrison’s second solo album, released in 1969. Wonderwall Music also has an important Apple Records connection: it was the label’s first album release. Its unusual mixture of film music, Indian traditions, and psychedelic experimentation foreshadowed Harrison’s later interest in world music.
