What was the name of Genghis Khan's primary wife?
Answer
Börte
Answer
Börte
Genghis Khan’s primary wife was Börte, also known as Börte Üjin. She was his first wife and remained his principal consort as Temüjin rose from a vulnerable tribal leader to founder of the Mongol Empire.
Temüjin and Börte were betrothed when they were young, and they married when Temüjin was about fifteen. Soon afterward, Börte was abducted by the Merkit, a rival group connected to an earlier conflict involving Temüjin’s family. Temüjin secured help from Toghrul and Jamukha, recovered her, and used the crisis to strengthen important alliances.
Börte played a significant role in the early Mongol state. She advised Temüjin and helped manage affairs while he was campaigning. She bore him four sons—Jochi, Chagatai, Ögedei, and Tolui—and several daughters. These sons became central figures in the expansion and succession of the empire.
The other women listed were also associated with Genghis Khan, but they were not his primary wife. Börte held the senior position among his spouses.
