What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s older brother and lifelong companion?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s older brother and lifelong companion was Warren Lewis. Warren, often called Warnie, was born in 1895, three years before his younger brother Clive Staples Lewis.

The brothers shared a close relationship throughout childhood and adulthood. They attended school together for a period, served in the First World War, and later lived together at The Kilns, Lewis’s home near Oxford.

Warren Lewis became a soldier and later worked as a historian and secretary. His interests included French history, and he edited and published historical material as well as helping preserve records concerning his brother’s life and work.

Readers sometimes confuse Warren Lewis with characters from the Chronicles of Narnia or with other literary friends of C.S. Lewis. Warren was not a fictional figure or merely a biographer; he was Lewis’s real brother and a major presence in his private life.
