What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s fictional world in The Chronicles of Narnia?

The story behind the answer

The fictional world in C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia is called Narnia.

Narnia is both the name of the wider fictional world and, more specifically, the kingdom at the center of the series. Lewis populated it with humans, talking animals, mythical creatures, and figures drawn from Christian, classical, and European literary traditions. The stories span a long internal history, from the world’s creation in The Magician’s Nephew to its end in The Last Battle.

Narnia is not simply another name for Earth. Human children usually enter it from Earth through magical routes, including a wardrobe, a painting, and a railway accident. The series includes other lands such as Calormen and Archenland, but Narnia remains its principal setting and the source of the books’ collective title.
