What was the name of C.S. Lewis’s fictional demon who writes letters to his nephew?

The story behind the answer

The fictional demon who writes letters to his nephew in C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters is Screwtape. The book presents a series of letters from Screwtape, an experienced tempter, to Wormwood, a junior demon assigned to influence a human subject.

Lewis published The Screwtape Letters in book form in 1942. The work had first appeared as letters in the Anglican newspaper The Guardian, beginning in 1941. Its unusual viewpoint lets Lewis discuss temptation, pride, distraction, self-deception, and spiritual habits through demonic advice that often reveals the opposite of what Screwtape intends.

Screwtape is not the human protagonist, and Wormwood is not the letter writer. That distinction is the most common source of confusion. The human is deliberately left unnamed, allowing the satirical correspondence to function as a general study of moral and spiritual psychology rather than as a conventional character narrative.
