What was the name of Columbus's flagship on his first voyage?
Answer
Santa María
Answer
Santa María
The name of Columbus’s flagship on his first voyage was Santa María.
The Santa María was the largest of the three ships that sailed from Palos, Spain, in August 1492. Columbus traveled aboard it, while the smaller caravels Pinta and Niña were commanded by Martín Alonso Pinzón and Vicente Yáñez Pinzón. The ship was owned by Juan de la Cosa, who also served as its master.
Historical sources sometimes describe the Santa María as a nao rather than a caravel, and Columbus’s records also called it La Capitana, meaning “the captain.” La Gallega is associated with the vessel’s earlier name or origin, but Santa María is the standard answer to this quiz question.
The flagship never returned to Spain. It ran aground on Hispaniola on Christmas Eve in 1492, and its timbers were used to build the settlement of La Navidad.
