Legend was the name of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ 1984 greatest-hits album.
Released by Island Records on 8 May 1984, Legend appeared three years after Marley’s death. It compiled many of his most commercially successful and widely recognized recordings, including “Is This Love,” “No Woman, No Cry,” “Could You Be Loved,” “Redemption Song,” and “One Love/People Get Ready.”
The compilation became one of the best-selling reggae albums ever released. Its accessible selection introduced generations of listeners to Marley’s music, although it does not represent every side of his catalog. More politically focused albums such as Survival and Uprising are only partly reflected in the track list.
The album’s title is sometimes confused with later Marley compilations such as Gold or Songs of Freedom. Legend is the specific 1984 compilation whose sequence became especially influential in defining Marley’s mainstream international reputation.
