What was the name of Alan Turing's childhood friend who died in 1930?
Answer
Christopher Morcom
Answer
Christopher Morcom
Alan Turing’s childhood friend who died in 1930 was Christopher Morcom.
Christopher Collan Morcom was Turing’s fellow student at Sherborne School in Dorset. They shared interests in mathematics and science, and Morcom became one of the most important intellectual and emotional influences on Turing’s early life. Morcom has often been described as Turing’s first love, although the surviving evidence indicates that Turing’s romantic feelings were not clearly reciprocated.
Morcom died on 13 February 1930, aged 18, from complications of bovine tuberculosis. His death deeply affected Turing, who continued corresponding with Morcom’s mother and reflected on the relationship between mind, matter, and scientific understanding.
The 2014 film The Imitation Game dramatised Turing and Morcom’s relationship, but it changes several details. Their real connection centred on mathematics and chemistry rather than the film’s fictionalised cryptography storyline. The film also invents the idea that Turing named a machine “Christopher” after Morcom. Turing did, however, receive the Christopher Morcom Science Prize as its first recipient.
