What was the last major battle of the Revolutionary War?
Answer
Battle of Yorktown
Answer
Battle of Yorktown
The last major battle of the American Revolutionary War was the Battle of Yorktown, more precisely the Siege of Yorktown.
The siege took place in Virginia from September 28 to October 19, 1781. American forces under George Washington joined French troops commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau, while a French fleet under the Comte de Grasse blocked British relief by sea. Together, the allied army and navy trapped the British army commanded by Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis on the Yorktown peninsula.
After weeks of bombardment and the capture of key British defensive positions, Cornwallis surrendered. The victory destroyed Britain's ability to conduct a large offensive campaign in North America and led to peace negotiations, although smaller military actions and political work continued afterward.
Yorktown is often called the final major battle rather than the absolute final clash of the war. Fighting did not stop instantly, and the Treaty of Paris was not signed until 1783. Battles such as Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse, and Eutaw Springs were important earlier engagements, but Yorktown was the decisive final major land campaign.
